Camille’s Cookies

While browsing through a craft fair a month ago I happened upon a cookie baker. I was intrigued, especially because they were not only gluten-free, but also vegan. Although I’m a pretty decent baker, cookies are the bane of my existence. They drive me nuts and I spend so much time peering through the oven window saying ‘please, please turn out’; and they usually don’t. So when I see cookies I usually pick a few up to try.

I must say I was skeptical of these ones. You see, they were healthy. They were made with vegetables and healthy stuff. I wasn’t so sure about these as I grew up on sugar and sweets weren’t meant to be healthy (chocolate in the morning is still ok). I’d had a red velvet cupcake quite a while ago made with beets and it was gross. Being half Polish, I love beets, but in my cupcake? Yuck! All I could taste were beets and it was too weird – beets in a cake; not my thing. Camille, I think, had experience converting people like me. She offered a sample and it was absolutely fabulous. Converted!!

Camille’s home-based company, Camille’s Cookies, makes cookies that are not only healthy, but taste amazing. Seriously, I sampled a chocolate chip spinach cookie and I would not have known there was spinach in there had she not told me. It had amazing texture (and I mean ‘normal’ texture too), pleasant flavours and aromas, and moist – not dry and not gooey – perfect. A box each of the chocolate chip beet and sweet potato coconut walnut came home with me and they are delicious. My mom is even impressed.

Camille is also hosting a Gluten-Free Victorian Tea Service this coming Saturday. Talk about a cool idea! It will be complete with scones, sandwiches, desserts, and of course tea. It will take place at The Village Clinic on Churchill Ave, but reservations are required. Act fast as seating is limited. Something like this is sure to be a hit – it is absolutely divine.
